6. Plant space is more important than décor space. The welfare of your plants should be prioritized. They are the reason for your garden. Their safety and optimal living conditions should not be compromised for aesthetic reasons.

7. Simplicity is in. A lot of gardens nowadays go for the minimalist approach. After all, many people believe that to fully savor your garden, you should be able to walk around it. Try creating pathways using pebbles, rock and slabs. The combination can be very elegant while being simple (and inexpensive) at the same time.

8. Lawn and garden décor should jive with the plants, not the other way around. There are decorations that may prove unhealthy for certain types of plants. Wooden decors, for example, can be infested by pests that would feed on growing crops. Birdhouses and birdbaths will attract avian creatures that may ruin some annuals.

9. The decors and the plants should complement the house. Often, the mistake of many landscape artists is that they take the house out of the picture whenever they design gardens. This shouldn’t be the case. Gardens aren’t isolated areas. They remain as a part of the home.

10. Flexibility is key. Lawn and garden décor should not crowd the garden space. Remember, there will be occasions when you’ll need the area for the entertainment of your guests.

Want to put your lawn and garden décor to good use? Some methods have become quite passé. Simply bundling your ornaments with the plants is quite simplistic, and may compromise design. Buying these decors at random might even ruin the general theme you have in mind.

Before planning, and eventually buying, lawn and garden décor, please take note of the following tips that will ensure a better and more beautiful garden for your home.

1. Color is the key. Your garden must possess symmetry of colors. There are no rules to follow here. You just need a plan before purchasing the ornaments you may need.

2. Contrast is not a bad thing. Conflicting color schemes can work. A solid colored arch or arbor, for example, would make vibrantly hued flowers show more. But…

3. Conflicting design elements can ruin the potentials of your garden. You cannot introduce components that will not complement each other.

4. You need a centerpiece. You can’t have massive garden structures scattered all over the place. Your garden has to have a focal point where your visitors’ eyes will rest.

5. Location, location, location! This aspect isn’t only important for the real estate business. The overall layout of your garden, as well as your choice of lawn and garden décor, will depend on how much space you could accord for your garden.

Home garden décor can be anything that would aesthetically complement your indoor setup. It can be the ornamental pots where you’d want to place your flowers. Or even window designs that will add color to the area once sunlight passes through the same. There are also miniaturized arches, arbors and even trellises that are perfect for home gardening. For the more adventurous, topiary tools are likewise available to make any plant a home garden décor in itself!

Believe it or not, even watering cans have become a category of home garden décor. Watering cans these days come in a variety of shapes and sizes, often with unique designs that will make anyone take notice. There are watering cans shaped like animals. There are watering cans shaped like famous structures. And there are watering cans shaped quite oddly, preferring the abstract route instead.

One thing is certain: when it comes to indoor gardening, you will never run out of decorative options. There is always a way, as well as an ornament, that will help bring your home garden to life. Finding the right one is a matter of finding a décor that has a lot of functionality and is built with a lot of style. It is also a matter of preference, as well as what will make the indoor garden look more complete. Nevertheless, the quest to find the decoration for your home garden will most certainly prove to be an enjoyable experience.

There’s a new trend emerging among gardening enthusiasts. Since space constraint is a common problem among those who enjoy gardening, a new breed of this hobby has developed. It’s called indoor gardening, or home gardening as it is called in other circles.

Home gardening involves the cultivation of plants inside one’s home. This can be accomplished in many ways. A mini-greenhouse would be the easiest to imagine. Home gardeners usually select a spot inside their house which receives an adequate amount of sunlight. They reserve this spot for rows of seedlings supported by their own basins. Hence, home gardening has also been called canister gardening.

Plants in pots are also a popular option, of course. Placing them in the aforementioned area can even make the process even more convenient.

But let’s face it. No matter how convenient home gardening can be, the indoor rows of plants we will raise won’t be as vibrantly explosive as an outdoor garden.

This concern has led to the birth of a relatively new industry: home garden décor.

The fact that a sun-dial “marks only the sunny hours” doesn’t detract from its value or its charm. This silent recorder of the passing of time creates seems to have a mysterious drawing power of interest and awe.

Sun-dials were the only time-keepers known for centuries before clocks and watches were invented. Sun-dial time is called Apparent time, and clock time Mean time, and the difference between the two is known as the equation of time. A sun-dial and a clock will not agree absolutely except at four different periods of the year, for a few days in the middle of June, the middle of September, December and March. At these periods we have the typical days of the year, the longest days in June, the shortest in December, and the twelve-hour day in September and March when the sun rises and sets at six o’clock. At all other times the clock is either a few minutes faster or a few minutes later than the Apparent time. So you don’t want to “set your clock by it”, but the sun-dial has other ornamental value.

THERE are many interesting varieties of arbors suitable for gardens. Pergolas, trellises, bowers, or arches over pathways are all near enough in appearance and purpose to be called "arbors."

The word "pergola" usually includes various semi-architectural features that add variety and charm to a garden by making an attractive support for flowering vines and climbers, and by thus covering walks and pathways and making shady and airy tunnels. The pergola is made up of a series of columns or piers in a row, and is flat on top, with beams or poles interlaced overhead.

A pergola should lead to some object like a summer-house, a bench, or a fountain ; or it may connect one part of a garden with another, or act as a screen, much as would a hedge between a flower garden and the vegetable garden.

No matter what form it may take, whether it is flat on top like a pergola or domed like a series of arches, the position of the arbor in a garden must be carefully selected. You don't want it to look like a tangled mass of greenery piled up in the most prominent place in the garden that provides a damp, cozy home for bugs and other insects.

Flowering vines and climbers appear to the best advantage when trained on the posts and cross beams of an arbor, and the glimmering light and shade that plays along this covered way makes it a charming feature of garden magic.

To the garden lover who realizes that there is more to ornamental gardening than the mere raising of flowers and plants, the arbor or pergola may be a welcome accessory, whose semi-architectural appearance will go far toward making his garden a more interesting place to look at, in winter as well as summer. It is imperative, however, that such a fixture should fit its surroundings in plan and appearance, just as a house should fit its site.

In the past home gardeners took great pains to create a garden that offered an air of privacy and enticed one to enjoy the atmosphere as well as gather flowers. Today that sense of purpose for your garden is being revived with the use of garden accessories which lends itself to that lived in feeling.

There is more to gardening than the mere raising of flowers. And we can make more use of our gardens, besides just the pleasure of gathering and caring for flowers, by introducing features that will give charm even when there are no flowers in bloom.

Stone, brick, concrete, terra-cotta and wood are all suitable for the embellishment of gardens.

A garden doesn't have to be "formal" in order for accessories of a semi- architectural nature to be successfully introduced. But everything depends upon the nature and design of these pieces and whether or not they are placed so they fit harmoniously in the garden picture.

There can be no hard and fast rules concerning the use of garden accessories. Some gardens may be improved by the judicious use of a pergola, or even a piece of statuary in the form of a terminal figure, but in others they would look hideous. It is all a question of environment. That's why our gardens need to be individual and not some cookie-cutter variety.

A little thought or planning for the look, feel and comfort you hope to achieve can give a more pleasant gardening experience. Let your "garden" be the talk of the neighborhood.

When it comes to decorating your outdoor space with color, there are more varieties to choose from than you can even imagine. Garden flowers come in so many colors, shapes and sizes; you may trouble deciding which selections will work the best in your landscape. Before you head out to the local nursery to confuse yourself with the many choices available, take a bit of time to formulate criteria that will help you to narrow your choices before you ever set foot in the annual or perennial departments. Taking the time to select plants and garden flowers that will work the best in your conditions will not only make your shopping experience a little bit easier; it will also ensure that the plants that you do buy will thrive in the environment you place them in.

Finding Native Plants

One of the first factors to consider when you are shopping for garden flowers is which plants are actually native to your area. It stands to reason that plants that grow well naturally in an environment will probably work in your garden. To learn which garden flowers and plants grow naturally where you live, talk to your local extension office. They will undoubtedly have any number of choices that you can mull over in creating a garden that will thrive in your conditions. This will be especially helpful in selecting perennials for your garden flowers that will bloom year after year. These types of plants need the proper environment to thrive, and taking the time to choose these plants correctly will reward you with plenty of color and beauty for years to come.

Sun, Shade and Moisture Requirements

Even native plants will work better in some areas of your yard than in others, so spend the time evaluating the area you will be placing your garden flowers into before you ever pick up a shovel. Watch to see how much light the area receives. If it is primarily a shady area, choose garden flowers that like low light conditions. For areas that are in full sun, it is best to select garden flowers that are going to be hardier. Moisture requirements are another consideration. If you do not have an irrigation system and you don't want to spend excess time with your watering can or hose, choose plants that are drought tolerant. For information about sun and water requirements, read the tags that come with the plants, or talk to your local nursery about the type of conditions that certain plants require.

Garden flowers are a great way to bring color and fragrance to an outdoor living space. By taking your time and using care in selecting the best garden flowers for your area, you will be able to enjoy those beautiful blooms all summer long.

Carefully positioned trees can save up to 25% of a household’s energy consumption for heating and cooling. Computer models devised by the U.S. Department of Energy predict that the proper placement of only three trees will save an average household between $100 and $250 in energy costs annually.

On average, a well-designed landscape provides enough energy savings to return your initial investment in less than 8 years. An 8-foot (2.4-meter) deciduous (leaf-shedding) tree, for example, costs about as much as an awning for one large window and can ultimately save your household hundreds of dollars in reduced cooling costs, yet still admit some winter sunshine to reduce heating and lighting costs. Landscaping can save you money in summer or winter.
