Vegetables should be an essential part of your eating plan for a healthy body. The Federal Government suggests a person needs 2 cups of vegetables per day: (1 cup of raw or cooked vegetables or vegetable juice, or 2 cups of raw leafy greens can be considered as 1 cup from the vegetable group). Grocery stores have their appealing displays of delicious looking veggies, but it seems every year the foods needed to keep the body strong and healthy are becoming more and more expensive. Sometimes it’s a strain to provide the nutrition needed and stay within the budget.
Growing your own vegetables might be a viable alternative, BUT there are several things to consider before putting out the initial expense to get started:
- What kind of vegetables does your family like and are they easy to grow?
- Do you have room for a garden? (If not you may consider starting with growing in containers.)
- Does the area get lots of sun?Is it close to a source of water?
- Will you need to convert part of the lawn to a garden area?
- What kind of gardening tools will I need?
- How much time will be required for my garden to produce the crops I want?
These are just a few of the things to think about before plunging into the gardening craze.
On the other hand, some of the benefits of growing your own vegetables are:
- Fresh
- Vine Ripe
- Organic
- Exercise
- Satisfaction
You might also want to plant some small fruit plants in or near the vegetables for the best of both essentials: fruits and vegetables, fresh, together.
